翻譯為“憂郁的”、“使人悲傷的”似乎并不是特別準確，“sad、sorrow、gloom”用于描述悲傷可能更常見一些，Melancholy意思是：“deep and long-lasting sadness”程度要更深，表達一種深沉的、長久的、無來由的憂郁狀態：Melancholy is beyond sad: as a noun or an adjective, it's a word for the gloomiest of spirits

聶魯達的一首詩便很好的詮釋了這個詞的意境——《我喜歡你是寂靜的 I Like for You to Be Still》：

I like for you to be still: it is as though you are absent

and you hear me from far away and my voice does not touch you

It seems as though your eyes had flown away

and it seems that a kiss had sealed your mouth

我喜歡你是靜靜的：仿佛你消失了一樣

你從遠處聆聽我，我的聲音卻無法觸及你

好像你的目光已經游離飄去

如同一個吻，封緘了你的嘴

As all things are filled with my soul

you emerge from the things, filled with my soul

You are like my soul, a butterfly of dreams

你如同“憂郁”這個詞

徐志摩在《青年雜詠》中把“Melancholy”翻譯為“眸冷骨累”，是如翡冷翠般的徐志摩式翻譯，悲傷又無限溫柔。

青年雜詠①

　　青年！

　　你為什么沉湎于悲哀？

　　你為什么耽樂于悲哀？

　　你不幸為今世的青年，

　　你的天是沉碧奈何天；

　　你筑起了一座水晶宮殿，
